Phasing out of Lead Shot in Wetlands Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 January 2009
In the framework of the Sustainable Hunting Initiative, FACE has recently written - jointly with BirdLife International - a letter to the European Commission to request their intentions for the phasing out the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands.
Already in November 2004 (at the Bergen op Zoom Conference), Member States and the European Commission committed “to aim to phase out the use of lead-shot in wetlands as soon as possible and ultimately by 2009”, something which is fully in line with Point 9 of the FACE/BirdLife Agreement of October 2004. More recently AEWA, at its 4th Meeting of the Parties, strongly urged the Contracting Parties, which have not yet phased out the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands, to publish self-imposed timetables for completing the phase out as soon as possible and to inform the Secretariat accordingly by 30 September 2009.

We believe it is in the interest of FACE Members from countries where the use of lead shot in wetlands has not yet been phased out, to take initiative and actively engage in dialogue on this issue with the responsible governmental institutions without further delay. This is important both for the image of hunters as responsible managers of wildfowl and wetland resources, and to ensure that any bans are realistic and based on the best available information.
