This month starts with the sad news of one of Ireland’s top fly dressers Rod Tye succumbing to his long term illness passing away last week. It was nearly a year to the day since I rang him in the hospital passing on good wishes from all the fly dressers from the Loughs Agency show in 2008. I believe I can say that his contribution to fly dressers by way of his incredibly dyed materials and innovative patterns will remain with us for many years to come. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family. With the days becoming lighter and the general temperatures rising, Anglers are now set for good hatches of fly life on the rivers and Loughs across Ireland. Reports from anglers on Lough Erne, is that there is some fly life on the surface and a few decent fish taken on the mid western side of the Lough. Earlier in the month I and boat partner Gerry Taggart decided to visit Lough Sheelin to see for ourselves how work had progressed on this wonderful Lough. We arrived on the Sunday morning at Kilnahard pier, and the first person to greet us was my friend Tim Crothers, who reported that the Duck fly was not up yet, but it was worth wetting a line in chambers bay, crane Island and Kilnahard point, as fish were taken in these areas last week. With a team of Dabblers on the point and middle dropper and a Connemara bumble on the bob we started our drift just at the mouth of the bay at crane Island and were delighted to see that the clarity of the water was excellent. On my third cast hooked into a nice fish around 3lb which had taken the Claret Dabbler this was however short lived as it shook the hook after around 10 seconds. During the day fish were seen moving in Holly well bay and at merry point, but with little fly on the surface it was hard to entice them, this was to be my only offer for the day. At 4.30 we decided to call it a day and returned to the bay where Tim and his boat partner Thomas reported that they had four fish to the boat and safely released, mainly on the claret dabbler. We did not hear of any other fish caught that day but we left the shores confident that by what we had seen of the Lough, this is going to be a good season, thanks to the good work carried out by the members and committee of the Lough Sheelin Trout protection society. Latest report from anglers on Lough Sheelin is that fish from 2 1/2lb to 6lb have been taken on the surface This now leads me onto a pattern I dressed last year for the Loughs and proved to be a good early season fly and also an excellent pattern for sea trout.
