Hares more numerous in Irish Coursing Club Preserves than wider countryside Print E-mail
press releases
Wednesday, 24 February 2010

Irish hares are eighteen times more abundant in areas managed by the Irish Coursing Club (ICC) than at similar sites in the wider countryside a recent study by Queen's University Belfast has shown.

There are approximately 76 local coursing clubs distributed throughout Ireland and each is associated with a number of discrete localities, known colloquially as 'hare preserves'.

These are managed favourably for hares including predator control, prohibition of other forms of hunting such as shooting and poaching and the maintenance and enhancement of suitable hare habitat.

press releases
Thursday, 28 January 2010

Under the terms of the EU Birds Directive, all EU member States, including Ireland, are bound to take measures to protect all wild birds and their habitats. The Directive allows member States to make derogations from its protective measures where certain wild bird species covered by the declaration are causing damage to crops, livestock and fauna or represent a threat to public health or to air safety. The declarations, which are attached, renew the derogations for the period January to April 2010 and exclude the use of meat baits for the purposes of the control of certain wild bird pest species by means of poison which was introduced with effect from 1st January, 2008.

The Minister has signed 4 declarations for the 4 month period January to April 2010 for the provinces of Connaught, Leinster, Munster and the administrative counties of Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.    A separate countrywide derogation is issued in respect of air safety.

NI Draft Wildlife Bill - Urgent Need for Lobbying Now! Print E-mail
press releases
Monday, 25 January 2010

The recent Second Reading of the draft Wildlife Bill for NI revealed that there is considerable support from MLA's of a variety of political persuasions for putting the Irish Hare under complete protection in NI.  This is despite the fact that in the 2008 Public Consultation (Review of the Wildlife Order) out of 37 respondents commenting on the issue only 6 supported this option.

If Irish Hares were put under the Schedule of species offered protection at all times (known in the current Act as Schedule 5), it would become an offence intentionally to kill, injure, or take, possess, or trade in any wild animal listed in the Schedule, however, more significantly, it would also prohibit interference with places used for shelter or protection, or intentionally disturbing animals occupying such places.

John Creedon RIP Print E-mail
press releases
Tuesday, 19 January 2010

It is with great regret and sadness that we have learned of the sudden passing of one of Ireland's leading deer stalking personalities and former WDAI chairman John Creedon. John Creedon was chairman of the Wild Deer Association of Ireland from 2005 - 2008 and during his tenure contributed significantly to the association’s development into a leading national organisation.

A member of the WDAI for almost 20 years he unselfishly devoted him time to the betterment of Ireland’s wild deer herds and those who had similar interests. John was a man who had seen a lot of the world, been involved in deer stalking and bird shooting all his life and a keen wild life photographer meant you where always guaranteed a good story with the John Creedon humour added in for good measure.

He will be sadly missed by all hunting and shooting people who were lucky enough to meet him. May he rest in peace - Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Temporary ban on Wildfowling to continue – Northern Ireland Print E-mail
press releases
Thursday, 14 January 2010

In Northern Ireland, the Department of the Environment today reviewed the temporary wildfowling suspension introduced on 7th January, and confirmed that it will continue, due to continuing hard ground conditions across Northern Ireland.  Species such as ducks, geese and shore waders are having difficulty feeding in the frozen ground, threatening the birds’ natural survival.

The suspension, under the Wildlife Order, will continue until Wednesday 20th January.

Although woodcock & snipe are not covered by this suspension in Northern Ireland, Countryside Alliance Ireland, in the interest of good conservation practice, calls for all its members to continue to observe a voluntary cessation of shooting of such birds until the wildfowling ban has ended.
