Following the incident at Loughbrickland on 1 March 2011 (where the USPCA and PSNI seized a vehicle and trailer containing two stags which the USPCA believes were about to be released for hunting), CAI Chief Executive, Lyall Plant has released the following statement: “Countryside Alliance Ireland wholeheartedly condemns all illegal activity. As an active member of the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime in Northern Ireland, we work together with other organisations to reduce wildlife crime by raising awareness and promoting effective enforcement. Animal welfare is of prime importance to all responsible country sports enthusiasts, who carry out their activities in a professional and ethical manner to ensure they are beyond reproach”. |

Representatives from the international hunting community met for a conference in the Republic of Ireland in mid-August and signed the historic Charter of the International Union of Hunting with Hounds which includes the declaration that “This Union…..actively opposes those who seek to attack the interests of hunting with hounds.” Download the Charter here |

Northern Ireland's farming, shooting and hunting community will be keeping a close eye on the review of The Wildlife (NI) Order 1985 over the coming months. The Wildlife Order is Northern Ireland's primary wildlife legislation, the principal aims of which are to provide for the sustainable management of the countryside and the plants and animals within it. Most importantly for farmers and field sports enthusiasts, it determines which animals may be hunted or taken, when this can be done and by what methods. |
