The Minister noted confirmation by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) that the strain involved is H7 and that it is highly pathogenic. As a consequence, the required EU movement restrictions on poultry and poultry products had been put in place by DEFRA and a ban had been imposed on bird gatherings and shows in the control zone around the outbreak premises.The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, today referred to the case of avian 'flu on a poultry premises in Oxfordshire in England. |

The Board of Countryside Alliance is pleased to announce that Mr Paul Cran has been elected New Chairman of Countryside Alliance Ireland. Paul who comes from Co Wicklow is the first Republic of Ireland person to hold this position. He takes over from Mr Ken Taylor who has guided Countryside Alliance Ireland for the last three years. Paul has a long history in merchant banking and oil related industries. His main pastimes are shooting and fishing. Paul is actively involved in the preservation of field sports and our rual heritage and he is confident that as Chairman of Countryside Alliance Ireland he will be able to make a positive contribution to the future direction and growth of the organisation.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Brendan Smith TD, today published a consultation paper on a new draft Animal Health & Welfare Bill. Minister Smith described the consultation process as "offering stakeholders and other interested parties a unique opportunity to contribute to the preparation of a modern and comprehensive Bill that will be fit-for-purpose in the 21st century. |
