Tapeworm Controls Retained for Dogs Entering the UK and Ireland Print E-mail

Cocker SpanielThe European Union has approved the retention of tapeworm controls for dogs entering the UK and Ireland.  This derogation, which takes effect on 1st January 2012, will help keep the UK's dog and fox population free of the killer tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. 

In many countries in Europe this tapeworm is rapidly spreading through the fox population and there are growing concerns about protecting the human population.  Unfortunately, in countries where this tapeworm is present, it is simple to become infected; it is only a matter of accidentally ingesting some tapeworm eggs from dog or fox faeces.  

Therefore those who shoot and work in the countryside or own dogs are all key risk groups.

New Chairman for Countryside Alliance Ireland Print E-mail

Dr Peter BaconCountryside Alliance Ireland is delighted to announce that Dr Peter Bacon has been appointed as the new Chairman of Countryside Alliance Ireland.  

Peter has taken over from Mr Paul Cran following completion of his three year tenure.  However, Paul remains as an active member of the Board maintaining the position of Deputy Chairman for the coming year.  Peter brings to the position years of experience in dealing with complex situations and believes that his skills will be valuable to CAI. 

Peter has a long tradition of participation in country sports especially shooting and conservation.  He has also spent a decade riding to hounds and in recent years has returned to fishing.

 
Consultation on Ending the Use of Lead Shot for Hunting in Wetlands Print E-mail

wildfowl nestA consultation on banning the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands is presently open for responses.  Mr Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, is inviting submissions on a process to end the use of lead shot for hunting in wetlands, to be in line with Ireland’s international obligations.  The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 21st December 2011.

‘Gasland’ Film Showing in Belfast Print E-mail

The Black Box in Belfast will host the film documentary ‘Gasland’ on Tuesday 15th November 2011 at 7pm.   

‘Gasland’ explores the effects of hydraulic-fracturing or ‘fracking’ on communities in America.  The showing of the film has been organised by local people following plans that have been put into place to allow ‘fracking’ over a large area of Northern Ireland.
