PAW NI – reporting wildlife crime

This form has been produced by PAW NI to facilitate the reporting of wildlife crimes and suspected incidents. Alleged criminal acts against protected species MUST continue to be reported to the PSNI in the first instance. However, as an additional avenue, all member organisations of PAW NI have agreed to record crimes/incidents reported to them by their staff, members or the public for quarterly submission to the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU).

NWCU will assess these submissions for inclusion in the NWCU database by applying the standard grounds for inclusion of information in an intelligence database, which in most cases will be the prevention and detection of crime. As a police-led unit the NWCU is in a position to check with other police forces / relevant agencies to see if data are already recorded elsewhere, and whether such recorded data can be shared with the NWCU as intelligence.

This information will help NWCU build a general picture of wildlife crime issues across Northern Ireland. The NWCU will obtain actual crime figures from the PSNI for their reporting statistics. However, the information collected on these documents will allow the PSNI, NWCU and PAW NI to monitor the effectiveness of reporting wildlife crime, and the number/type of suspected incidents that may be used to justify additional resources to tackle crime if needed.

Protocol

When someone contacts your organisation to report a wildlife crime or suspected incident, you should take the details on the form overleaf, but advise the caller to contact the police directly either through the local station or the ‘crimestoppers’ line. If the caller does not want to contact the PSNI, ask if they give permission for you to contact PSNI on their behalf. If the caller wishes to remain anonymous, they can still report directly to the PSNI. If they do not want you to contact the PSNI, advise them that nothing can be done to tackle that incident.

If you do report an incident/crime to the PSNI on someone’s behalf, you can request a ‘command and control number’ to put on the form for reference. These forms will be collated and submitted to the NWCU quarterly, or as necessary, by the PAW NI representative in your  organisation.
