1. Countryside Alliance Ireland Chief to move on:

After 5 years service Countryside Alliance Ireland (CAI) Chief Executive, Ronan Gorman has announced his intention to leave CAI to seek another challenge. Ronan recently tendered his resignation and intends to leave CAI’s employment on 31st August 2007.

The Chairman Mr Ken Taylor and the CAI Board would like to thank Ronan for the outstanding job he has done for CAI. Membership has grown phenomenally, our political campaigns have been remarkably effective and our media presence is envied by many. Everyone involved in country sports would like to thank him for his hard work and wish him well for the future.

I leave CAI in very capable hands with a dedicated and professional team providing the catalyst for continued success. This team will continue to implement the policies and strategies that are set by the Chairman and Board and with the continued support of its members Countryside Alliance Ireland will continue to grow throughout Ireland.

3. Best Rural Retailer 2007 Launch

Countryside Alliance will launch its third annual Best Rural Retailer competition at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire on 2nd July, emphasising the links between rural communities and local food.

The Best Rural Retailer competition is a UK-wide Countryside Alliance initiative aimed at celebrating rural communities through its retailers, food, traditions and skills. The competition is nomination led and will open for nominations from the 2nd July at the Best Rural Retailer website at www.bestruralretailer.co.uk.

The national judging panel that includes Simon Hart Chief Executive of CA UK, the renowned environmentalist Zac Goldsmith and the Rural Tsar Stuart Burgess have said that this competition has been a massive success for our rural economy as it is the only competition that is celebrating people, and communities as well as produce and skills. Last year it reached over 18 million people through the media and we received over 2,000 votes, which is a tribute to the passion and loyalty people feel towards their retailers.

If you care about your community and you know of a retailer who is an ambassador for it, then it is vital that you nominate and help us to gain an accurate snapshot of rural life in 2007. Last year’s winners have reported a wonderful feel-good factor within their village, they have enjoyed the press attention and, perhaps most significantly, their takings have increased.

This competition is great for all of us, and it remains true that the bigger the noise we can make about our rural communities, the better. Unity and determination are key to our communities and this competition helps a positive rural story be heard in Northern Ireland and beyond.
