A meeting of the Firearms Consultative Panel was held on Thursday the 29th April 2010. This was the first meeting of the panel since the introduction of the new firearms licensing legislation. The aim of the meeting was to address the continuing problems that are arising around the country. It was clearly evident from the reports delivered by the shooting groups that we still have inconsistent approvals, misinterpretation of the commissioners guidelines and indeed their is clearly some evidence that draconian measures are being taken by some Garda districts to reduce the numbers of firearms within their jurisdiction. However, it should be also acknowledged that some Garda Districts have been exceptional in the way they are offering help and assistance to our members and are delivering a fair and consistent licensing system. The Firearms Policy Unit acknowledged that there were issues to address from a customer service prospective and the need to enhance their education program within the Garda on the new Firearms licensing laws. We believe that they are doing everything in their power to ensure a smooth and consistent approach to firearms licensing system is delivered. We also acknowledged the help and support the FPU have afforded our members over the last few months. A decision was also taken to maintain the FCP in its current form. This important decision will allow an open link for continuing communications and dialogue between the shooting organisations, the Department of Justice and the Firearms Policy Unit. |
