Alliance Party MLA, Dr Stephen Farry, failed to allay the fears of the angling community by refusing to reply to a question in the Assembly that it was not his intention to ban fishing.

This issue came to light during the debate to ban coursing in Northern Ireland.  It was evident that Dr Farry was ill at ease when questioned about his stance on fishing when comparisons were drawn with it in relation to other rural activities and he was unwilling to say that he was against a complete ban on angling in the near future.

Dr Farry was also told to take a day in the countryside and actually find out what happens in rural Northern Ireland.  Indeed, it was evident from his statements that he had never seen an Irish Hare let alone a fish except from a fishmongers.

Lyall Plant, Chief Executive, Countryside Alliance Ireland said "Dr Farry’s comments and lack of clarity were disturbing and it is obvious that the Alliance Party has aligned themselves with other organizations who are against a thriving countryside, farming and even owning a pet.  They bring nothing to the table in regard to conservation and animal welfare.

Lyall continued "This is the thin end of the wedge and it is clear that his support for a ban on hare coursing was a prejudiced decision and one that will not benefit conservation, the Irish Hare or rural Northern Ireland".

The Alliance Party needs to wake up and listen to the people of rural Northern Ireland and those constituents who participate in countryside activities.
