Contact your TD to end drift netting!

Following the decision by the National Salmon Commission to recommend an end to drift netting for salmon at the end of the 2006 season Countryside Alliance Ireland is asking members in the Republic of Ireland to contact their local TDs in support of this recommendation.

The simple facts are that salmon stocks have been in decline for sometime and several recent reports have confirmed that current drift netting practices are no longer sustainable. Additionally the value of a rod caught salmon is significantly greater and therefore so are the benefits to the rural economy.

Minister for the Marine Noel Dempsey TD will be making a decision on the future of drift netting over the coming weeks and we are therefore encouraging members to write to and ideally visit their TDs as a matter of urgency. A number of local angling bodies including FISSTA and the Stop Salmon Drift Nets Now campaign have worked tirelessly to bring about the better management of our wild salmon resource and we are delighted to be able to offer support to their campaign.
