The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is charged under various sections of the Wildlife Act 1976 and the Wildlife Amendment Act 2000  with a large number of licensing functions which are discharged by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Licensed activities include hunting for a range of species, taking, capturing or humanely killing species for scientific or educational purposes, importation of certain species and interfering with protected plant species. Permission is also required to carry out specific activities where such activities may have an impact on the conservation interest of a site designated for nature conservation, e.g. SAC, SPA or NHA. Details of activities  currently requiring a  licence and the relevant licence forms are available from the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

For certain other activities affecting  land, marine or freshwater areas in Ireland, e.g. aquaculture, forestry, felling etc. which require a permit or a licence, the relevant consenting authority responsible for regulation of such activities must assess each permit/licence application for its potential impact on the conservation interest of a site.
